AI-Generated Images

When you generate an image -- including a chart or infographic -- with an AI tool and place it in your essay, MLA format requires you to provide a caption with citation information under the image, within the body of the paper. You do not put a citation for the image on the works cited page. The caption begins with the figure number (all visual images and illustrations in an MLA essay are numbered sequentially).

Basic Format:

Fig. no. "Description of prompt" prompt. Name of AI Tool, version of AI tool, Company, date image was generated. URL.

Citation Example:

Fig. 2. "Image of a Westie dog wearing an emerald and ruby crown" prompt. Gemini 1.5 Flash, July 2024 version, Google, 2 Aug. 2024, https://gemini.google.com/
