APA Citation Guide

Generative AI (like ChatGPT) Reference Citation Format

Basic Format:

AI Company Name. (year, month day content was generated). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat

To find the tool name/model of the generative AI tool you are using, ask for that information in the chat interface.

For example, you can ask, "What model of ChatGPT is this?"

Reference Citation Example

OpenAI. (2025, August 21). High school grammar concepts [Generative AI chat]. ChatGPT. https://chatgpt.com/share/68a77b60-0ee4-800c-9acc-cd3fd573c311

Note: APA considers the author of generative AI to be the AI company of the AI tool that generated it, in this case Anthropic. If you cite more than one instance of material generated by the same AI tool in your work, follow APA rules for citing more than one work with the same author and publication year. In such a case, on the reference page add a lower-case letter after the day of publication, like this:

OpenAI. (2023, August 21a). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat

OpenAI. (2023, August 23b). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat

Note: Even though the dates are different, this will help readers find the reference from the in-text citation within the essay.
