What is Kanopy?

Kanopy is a video streaming service where you can view documentaries, TV shows, educational and training films, and popular theatrical releases across diverse subjects and disciplines.

With a Kanopy account you can do the following:

  • Watch anytime, anywhere on any device including TVs, desktop computers, laptops, phones, or tablets
  • Bookmark, link, embed, and share full length videos
  • Create custom clips and playlists

All videos are fully ADA compliant.

Usage

How can I use Kanopy films?

  • All Kanopy films can be used in the classroom or for personal use.

How can I watch Kanopy?

  • In addition to streaming through a web browser, the Kanopy app is available for the following devices: iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Android, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, FireTV, Fire, and Samsung.

Can I show a Kanopy film in a public setting?

  • Only films with public performance rights (PPR) can be used for extracurricular events that are affiliated with Dallas College, like student clubs or social events. However, you may not charge admission. Look for the PPR icon in the movie details.

Can I broadcast a film through a meeting software, like Teams?

  • No. Many Kanopy films have Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions on them, to prohibit broadcasting.

How can I host a virtual watch party?

  • Kanopy does not provide a virtual watch party function. Every user who wishes to view a film will need to login with their own Kanopy account.

Am I eligible for a Kanopy account?

  • Current Dallas College employees and students are eligible to sign up as a Dallas College Kanopy user.

Content

What kind of content is available?

  • Kanopy offers videos from providers such as BBC, PBS, HBO, the Great Courses, and the Criterion Collection. Many award-winning films, TV shows and documentaries are often available.

Can I find every movie in Kanopy?

  • No.

Why can't I find a film that I had previously seen on Kanopy?

  • Content on Kanopy have licenses that occassionally expire from the service. If you are a faculty member, we recommend checking the status of a video that you plan to use at the beginning of each semester, and reaching out to a librarian if you have questions.

How do I request a video be added to Kanopy?

  • Requests placed using Request Access feature in Kanopy are reviewed monthly. If the film you need is not showing up as an option, please reach out to a librarian. We cannot guarantee the availability of any video.

What other streaming videos can I access through Dallas College?

  • Many databases offer streaming video services. You can see the list on our A-Z Database page.
